Junction Box, Cables, Connectors

Junction boxes, cables, and connectors play crucial roles in electrical systems. The junction box serves as a protective enclosure for electrical connections, while cables transmit power efficiently. Connectors facilitate the secure linking of different components, ensuring a reliable and safe flow of electricity in various applications.

Junction Box, Cables, Connectors

Junction box, cables, connectors are important components to connect different components in our system.

Solar Module Junction Box

Solar module junction box is mounted on back side of solar panel. Position of junction box depends of type of solar panel.

Junction box is place where we get final output of solar panel after connecting all solar cells in series. We get two terminals one is positive and other is negative. We connect these terminals with extended cables at junction box.

At the other end of cable, we connect MC4 connectors for further extension of cables as per our need.

Cables

In solar PV system, we use two types of cables (wires). For connections between solar PV array and inverter, we use solar DC cables and for connections between inverter and main panel, we use AC cables.

AC Cables (Wires)

AC cables are used to carrying AC power from inverter to main panel. AC cables are similar to cables that we use in our households. Same type of cable we use in AC side application. Sizing of cables depend on power loss, cable length.

DC Cables (Wires)

Solar DC cables are similar to AC cables but only difference is that they are special purpose cables made for DC side application in solar PV system. Normally, all cables (wires) made as per different electrical parameters. But DC side cables are placed outdoor and always exposed to different atmospheric conditions, so it is important to provide additional protections to DC cables.

Some cable (wire) manufacturers have developed cables for DC side applications in solar PV system.

MC4 Connectors

MC4 connectors are used to solar panels to other equipment (other panels, DCDB, Inverter, etc.). MC4 stands for MC = multi contact, 4 = 4 mm diameter contact.

MC4 connectors are available in two types:

  • Male MC4 Connectors - Plug
  • Female MC4 Connectors - Socket
